Perfectly positioned in the hills and forests along the banks of the Chickahominy, River Mill is a modern, walkable residential community that invites connection with the outdoors and others.
River Mill’s central location and rich natural features provide an ideal setting for this community, which plays an important role in the reinvigoration of this previously bustling part of the county. Cite Design partnered with the developer to envision a master plan that promotes an active lifestyle while fostering connection and community.
In addition to designing the central amenity features, including an ensemble of community buildings and social spaces, Cite Design mapped miles of walking trails that spring from the community’s sidewalks to meander through the woods along the river. These trails inspire exploration, connection and movement—and, they allowed River Mill to become the very first recipient of the Active RVA Development Certification, which recognizes organizations and communities that encourage active lifestyles and demonstrate a commitment to physical activity in design details.
But Cite Design and River Mill’s innovative work isn’t done yet: the community plans to continue expanding its trail system, eventually linking up with the East Coast Greenway, a walking and biking route that stretches 3,000 miles from Maine to Florida.
